East Craigs House, 4B Burnbrae Drive, Edinburgh

East Craigs House, located at 4B Burnbrae Drive in Edinburgh, was built in 1786, with a semi-octagonal tower added around 1800. This two-storey building features a basement and has single-storey wings, with the basement exposed at the rear and a raised ground floor. The house has a three-bay main section with single bay wings, all finished in painted harl, and painted window margins on the entrance elevation.

The southeast entrance elevation is highlighted by decorative iron railings that flank the steps leading to the entrance, which oversails the basement. It features a timber door with a letterbox fanlight above, and a single window aligned above on the first floor. The central semi-octagonal stair tower has two windows, with the upper window being arched. There is also a timber door at the basement to the left of the re-entrant angle, and single windows on all floors to the left. The wings have single windows at the basement and ground floors, with canted bays.

The northwest rear elevation has eight bays, with a single window in the basement of the left wing. The central block features three windows at the basement and one on the first floor, along with four windows on the ground floor, most of which are not aligned. There is a timber door with a letterbox fanlight in the recessed wing to the right, and two single windows to the right.

On the southwest side elevation, there are single windows at the basement and ground floor of the main block, along with a central wallhead chimney in the wing. The northeast side elevation has a single window to the right at ground floor level.

The building has 4-, 8-, and 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a rooflight, stone skews, skewputts, gable and wallhead coped chimneystacks, and circular cans.

Inside, the building has been much altered, but the outstanding feature is the stair tower, which retains a corniced square-headed doorpiece. The property was converted into three flats around 2008.
