Description
Maybury Roadhouse, located on Maybury Road in Edinburgh, was designed by Patterson and Broom and built between 1935 and 1936. This building features a Streamline, cinema-style design and is primarily a single-storey structure, with some areas having galleries.
The exterior is made of painted concrete and includes metal-framed windows, some of which have decorative patterns. The building has an asymmetrical layout, highlighted by a wide, bowed entrance on the south side, which is covered by a canopy. Flanking this entrance are six tall windows, alongside an elongated, canted window at the gallery level that is also canopied. The eastern elevation, which houses the public bar, is set back and irregular, while the western elevation, which contains the dining room, has a long set-back design with a curved ground floor projection and a balcony above. Brick detailing has been added around the windows, and the roofs are flat, concealed behind parapets.
Inside, there is a curved galleried entrance hall featuring a sweeping imperial staircase with a stepped concrete balustrade topped with concentric metal grills. The interior retains original panelling, a chimneypiece, and light fittings, along with additional features in the galleried dining room and the former lounge bar.
