Description
The Portland Arms Public House, located at 1169 Shettleston Road in Glasgow, was designed by Thomson, Sandilands and MacLeod in 1937. This single-storey, five-bay building features a piend roof and showcases a striking Art Deco style, with a well-preserved interior. The exterior includes granite panels beneath the windows and framing the central two-leaf timber panelled door, along with decoratively patterned red brick and a parapet that has a central keystone-like detail. The main fascia displays raised lettering, and there is a hatch to the cellar located below the window in the outer bay on the left. The distinctive glazing throughout most of the street-facing windows features stylised sunbursts.
The windows are made of plate glass in fixed timber frames, with two large panes at the bottom and three smaller panes above. The roof is slate with zinc ridges.
Inside, the public house maintains its Art Deco style. The vestibule is adorned with red and white tiles arranged in a 'Y' shaped pattern, and the doors have chrome fittings, with those on the right and left leading to the bar, and a central two-leaf door leading to the off-sales counter. The panels above these doors feature sunburst-pattern glazing. The main bar floor is laid with grey and white tiles in a geometric pattern, and the walls are finished with decorative veneers up to three-quarters of their height. Timber veneered chimneypieces are located on both side walls. The ceiling has a simple cornice and square roof lights with neon lights mounted at the edges, while a lower oval section over the bar is also illuminated with neon lights on the interior edge.
The bar itself is an oval island, resembling a barrel, with a chrome band and various veneers. An oval gantry with a splayed column connects to a ceiling feature. There is bench seating with dividers that include match strikers, and fixed elongated oval tables that are now covered with formica. The rear wall features panelled and glazed screens that separate private rooms, which are currently used as storage. A projecting lobby leads to the lavatories, likely added around 1940, and there is a screened and glazed private sitting area to the left of the main door, with the ladies' room located to the right.
