Description
The Former Regal Cinema and Shops, now known as Lanark Bingo, is a 2-storey, 3-bay, symmetrical, horizontally styled L-plan building designed in the Art Deco style by Lennox D Paterson in 1936. The exterior features a horizontally overhanging canopy, large first-floor windows, and taller pilasters on the sides, all constructed from rendered brickwork. The entrance includes open terrazzo foyer steps flanked by symmetrical shopfronts that lead to the inner entrance, which has travertine marble bases and metal-framed plate glass windows, along with frosted and reeded glass panels in the clerestory.
Inside, the hall has a cream terrazzo floor with coloured geometric detailing, and there are central steps leading to the upper stalls foyer, which features Deco-style chrome handrails. The upper foyer is highlighted by a large hexagonal light fitting. The main auditorium boasts a wide framed proscenium arch, horizontal lighting troughs on the sides with curved ends, and two large Deco ceiling light fittings that include integral chevron detailed ventilator grilles. A backlit Deco clock is also present. The seating in the upper circle consists of velvet folding cinema seats with fan detailed cast-iron ends. Additionally, the projection room houses two original Peerless Magnarc film projectors. The upper floor windows feature vertical pattern margined metal-framed glazing.
