Description

Greens Playhouse, located at 59-69 Kirk Road in Wishaw, is a large, three-storey, ten-bay former cinema built in 1940 by John Fairweather. This plain Art Deco building features painted brick on the southeast (principal) and northeast elevations, while the northwest and southwest sides are finished in plain brick. The structure has a stepped eaves course and an advanced flat-roofed vestibule entrance, which was re-clad in modern materials in the late 20th century. Inside, many original architectural details, fixtures, and fittings remain, including a grand auditorium with Corinthian columns.

The southeast elevation showcases a wide, single-storey advanced vestibule entrance to the left, featuring "MECCA" signage at the center. Above this entrance is a large two-storey keystoned arch that frames three closely set windows on the first and second floors, topped with a circular Art Deco motif. To the far left is a narrow bay, while to the right of the entrance are seven plain bays with recessed blank rectangular panels, and a recessed plain bay at the far right.

On the northeast side, there are nine bays arranged in a 1-7-1 pattern, with seven plain bays in the center divided by brick pilaster strips, and the outer bays recessed. The northwest rear elevation mirrors the principal elevation's arrangement but features irregular fenestration on the far right, most of which is blocked. The southwest side has irregular fenestration and metal fire escapes.

The building has metal and timber windows, a pitched roof, and brick stacks on the southwest side. Inside, there is an imperial staircase to the left leading to the auditorium on the right and offices. The upper levels have terrazzo steps and landings adorned with Art Deco palm designs, along with original light fixtures and signage. The auditorium itself is an outstanding and enormous Classical/Art Deco theatre, largely unaltered except for the removal of stalls seating and the addition of new stair access to the balcony from the ground floor. The proscenium is flanked by giant Ionic columns, with ventilator and sound grilles on either side featuring Art Deco fretwork between Corinthian pilasters and semi-circular drums at the lower parts. The auditorium is lined with a Corinthian colonnade and pilastrade, and it includes Ionic pilastered aediculae for the boxes. The flat ceiling has a shallow recessed dome, with a cove ceiling beneath the circle, and original scroll-decorated cast metal seating in the balcony.
