Description
The building at 21-31 Lothian Road, Edinburgh, is a former cinema complex constructed in 1922 by J.S. Richardson and J.R. Mackay, with later work completed in 1928 by John McKissack. The design incorporates a monumental entrance in a projecting bay on the right side, which is the work of Richardson and Mackay. To the left is a recessed palazzo wing with projecting shops at ground level, added by McKissack in 1928, and topped with a mansard roof including a pedimented dormer.
The exterior is constructed of coursed ashlar, with painted finishes at ground and first floor levels on the right side. A prominent Doric Triumphal Arch, spanning two storeys, marks the entrance to the right. It features pilasters framing paired, glazed timber doors with carved rosettes, set within decorative surrounds and beneath a central canopy. Outer bays also have painted detailing. A round-headed arch incorporates stained glass (dated 1928) and decorative metalwork. The attic is lit by a tripartite window within a pedimented dormerhead, flanked by single, flat-topped dormers. Additional external detailing includes a cornice, stepped blocking course above the shops, a string course at second floor level, moulded eaves cornices, and a raised, decoratively stepped bay to the far left. A modern timber door in a moulded surround is situated in the outer left bay, alongside a first-floor window flanked by pilaster strips and an inscribed cartouche displaying the name "CALEY”. Modern shop fronts are present, and the first floor windows (second from the right) are blind. The windows at second floor level are set within moulded surrounds.
The interior retains its original 1920s layout and features a Classical Modern and Art Deco decorative scheme. The entrance vestibule is accessed through glazed oak doors, featuring Art Deco stained glass fanlights. The oak-panelled foyer is topped by a domed ceiling with Rococo plasterwork, incorporating a later addition of a box on the left side (installed in 2008). The original lift to the auditorium is located in the far-right section of the foyer, complete with original sliding oak doors on a chain track. An oak-panelled staircase is situated to the southeast of the foyer, distinguished by a square plan with a carved newel post featuring two "C" motifs flanking a gargoyle face and a hardwood banister. The proscenium arch is a prominent feature, composed of exaggerated reeded classical pilasters and a central Rococo foliate cartouche, with sunburst plaster panels and elaborate Art Deco grilles flanking the arch. Rectangular vents within the auditorium walls and ceilings are framed by classical foliate plasterwork. The original balcony remains, alongside later access stairs and a modern bar area in the upper section.
Original small-pane glazing is contained within metal frames. The roof is covered with grey slates. The projecting block on the right side is topped by scrolled skews and stepped stacks.
