Description
1 and 2 Castle Terrace in Edinburgh is a classical tenement block designed by John Clark around 1824. This four-storey building includes a basement and features modern shops that extend over the basement area facing Lothian Road. The facade has nine bays along Lothian Road and five bays along Castle Terrace, constructed from cream ashlar stone that is channelled at the ground level. There is a moulded cornice located between the second and third floors, along with a blocking course. The first-floor windows have aproned, moulded, and corniced architraves.
On the north elevation facing Castle Terrace, there is a dividing band between the basement and ground levels, as well as between the ground and first floors. The bays are separated by Doric pilasters, which are two-storey high between the first and second floors and single-storey high at the third floor. The entrance to No 2 is located in the second bay from the left, featuring stone steps and platts that arch over the basement area. The entrance has a timber panelled door with a three-pane fanlight set within an Ionic portico supported by fluted columns on pedestals.
The windows are fitted with twelve-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are corniced stacks with circular cans.
The property is enclosed by a boundary wall topped with spear-headed cast-iron railings on a low ashlar wall.
