Description

The presbytery of St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, located at 70 St Vincent Place in Lanark, was designed by Goldie and Hadfield and built between 1856 and 1859, with later additions. This two-storey building has an L-plan double pile layout. The original south wing is connected by a passage to the church. It is constructed of snecked rubble with ashlar dressings.

The presbytery features four bays, with a later three-bay projection at the ground level that has a pointed head to the off-centre door and three pairs of haunched lights. The first-floor windows have depressed arches, with the eastern window being larger and adorned with tracery. The roof is covered with small slates and has a cornice and straight skews.

On the south elevation, there are seven unequal bays. The two bays on the left are buttressed and feature Y tracery windows at the ground level. The two central bays have two-storey canted and gabled projections, although the left gable has been altered. The three bays on the right form the end of the later range, with three depressed arched windows on the first floor and two ground-level windows, including a door and a later projecting porch.

The north wing, which is a later addition, consists of six bays, each with paired haunched lights on both the ground and first floors of the west elevation. This wing also has a cornice, straight skews, axial stacks, and a slate roof.
