Description

The Roman Catholic Church of St Mary and the attached presbytery were built between 1877 and 1881 by architects Dunn and Hanson. The church is constructed from snecked stone and features a Welsh slate roof, designed in the Romanesque style, while the presbytery is in the Tudor style.

The church has five bays and includes a round-headed doorway on the right, set within a portal that has a stone pent roof. The arch of the doorway features two chamfers and a roll mould, along with a moulded drip stone. To the left of the doorway, there are round-headed windows with dripstones and a moulded sill string. Rounded stone brackets support the guttering. The east end of the church has three round-headed windows and a rose window consisting of three circles above. The roof is gabled, with kneelers, overlapping coping, and a foliated cross finial.

Attached to the left of the church is a two-storey, three-bay presbytery in an L-plan layout. It has a door and a narrow window located in an extruded stone porch, positioned between the projecting right bay and the rear wing. The presbytery features two- and three-light windows with shouldered lintels, and a steeply-pitched gabled roof with overlapping coping and corniced ridge stacks.
