Description

The Church of St Mary and the attached presbytery is a Roman Catholic church built between 1825 and 1827 by Joseph Ireland, with the presbytery added in 1833. The building is made of stuccoed brick and has a slate roof, designed in a Greek style. It features a moulded plinth, giant Doric pilasters, an entablature, and pediments on both the east and west sides. The west wall includes clasping pilasters and two additional pilasters flanking the doorway, which slopes inward at the top. This doorway has an architrave and a moulded cornice.

Both the north and south walls consist of five bays, with the outer bays recessed between pilasters. The windows are adorned with lugged architraves and a sill band. The east wall mirrors the west wall but lacks any openings. To the left of the church is a single-storey, one-bay link to the presbytery, which is pedimented and consists of two storeys and three bays. The two left-hand bays of the presbytery feature a single bay window on the ground floor, while the doorway is located in the right-hand bay.

Inside the church, there is a shallow coffered tunnel vault. The west gallery, which houses the organ, is supported by two Doric columns. At the east end, four engaged fluted Ionic columns with an entablature are present, along with pilasters on the return walls that have acanthus necking.
