Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a church built in 1870-71 by J R Veall and restored after a fire in 1964. It is constructed of red sandstone with some Bath stone dressings and features a tile roof, designed in the Early English style. The church consists of a nave, which includes a west porch and vestry added in 1896, a north aisle completed in 1878, and a south aisle finished in 1880. On the north side, there is a gabled vestry and a chapel, both added in the 1920s. The west porch is two storeys high and has two bays, featuring a moulded pointed north doorway. The aisles have five bays, separated by buttresses and adorned with plate tracery, with each window consisting of two lancet lights. The clerestory windows are paired lancets, and each side of the apse has a window with a single multi-foiled light.

Inside, the nave arcade has five bays with pointed sandstone arches that have edge mouldings, supported by round columns with foliated capitals. The clerestory windows each include a central inner banded shaft with a foliated capital. The original ribbed wagon roof was replaced after it was destroyed in 1964. The apse windows are flanked by narrow shafts. The font and pulpit are made of sandstone, with the pulpit featuring elaborate Gothic arcading.
