Description

The Church of St Mary, along with its presbytery, is a Roman Catholic church built between 1837 and 1838. It is constructed of squared sandstone and features slate roofs. The church has angle buttresses topped with pinnacles and a string course at the level of the window sills. Each window includes a mullion and a transom, with pointed upper lights beneath pointed heads and hoods. The north and south walls consist of four bays, while the west wall has two bays. At the top of the gable, there is a square stone bellcote with an embattled parapet, and below it, a niche containing a statue. The west door features a chamfered surround with a pointed head.

Adjoining the church on the east is the presbytery, which has three bays. It includes double-chamfered mullioned windows, with two lights on the left and one in the center. The right bay has four lights on the ground floor and three above. A drip course runs above the ground-floor windows and door. The central bay's door also has a chamfered stone surround with a pointed head. The right-hand gable is coped with kneelers, and there are chimneys with clustered shafts on the left and set back from the right-hand gable.

Inside the church, the west gallery features a panelled front with tracery decoration supported by two slim iron columns. The king-post roof is moulded, with moulded purlins and intermediate principals.
