Description

The Church of St Mary, built between 1825 and 1827 by architect Rickman, is a church constructed from squared sandstone with a slate roof. The building features a west tower, a nave with a clearstorey, a continuous chancel, and north and south aisles. All openings are chamfered lancets with hoods. The three-stage tower includes angle buttresses and a stone needle spire that is set back behind a parapet. The spire has openings under gablets on all four sides. The tower's bell openings and the windows of the second stage each consist of one light. Above the west doorway is a quatrefoil set within a circular surround. On either side of the lowest stage, there are projections with parapets, diagonal buttresses, and single-light windows facing west. Lower square-plan projections are located at the angles between these projections and the aisle walls. Each aisle contains six bays of paired lancets separated by buttresses with offsets, and the clearstorey windows are also paired. At the east end, beyond the aisles, there is a bay with a single light for the chancel, along with a single-storey projection at the angle between the east aisle walls and the chancel. The east window features five stepped lancet lights.

Inside, the church has five-bay arcades with moulded pointed arches and piers made up of four clustered columns. The nave and aisles are topped with ribbed plaster vaults. The front of the west gallery, which supports an organ, is decorated with carved tracery. There is no chancel arch; instead, the chancel is enclosed by a carved timber screen that includes a pulpit on the northern side.
