Description

The Church of St Leonard is a church built between 1852 and 1854 by Rampling of Preston, with a tower added in 1906. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and has a slate roof. The church features a nave with a lower chancel, a tower at the west end of the north side of the nave, a north organ chamber, and a lower gabled projection on the south side.

The west window consists of three lights with flowing tracery beneath a pointed head. Below this window is a low semi-octagonal buttressed projection with a parapet, which houses the font and has windows on three sides. The nave has three bays on the north side and four on the south, separated by buttresses. The windows on the nave contain two trefoiled lights under pointed heads with Geometric tracery, and there are two small timber dormers on each side.

The tower features diagonal buttresses and includes a porch in its lower stage. It has a stone spire set back behind a parapet, with bell openings that consist of two trefoiled lights under a pointed head with a trefoil. The doorway has a moulded pointed arch. The east window has five lights with Geometric tracery under a pointed head.

Inside, the nave boasts a steeply-pitched open timber roof supported by three trusses with curved braces to high collars and king posts. These trusses are tied at wallplate level by iron rods. To the left of the pointed chancel arch is a dressed sandstone opening resembling a window, which contains two trefoiled lights that hold organ pipes. The windows also feature some glass from the later 19th century.
