Description

Green Island, located at 16 Main Street in Limekilns, is an 18th-century building consisting of two attached two-storey houses that have been combined into one. The exterior is harled, with stone surrounds framing the openings.

On the south elevation, the main entrance is found on the eastern house, featuring a central door with a modern glazed porch and flanking windows. Above, there are three first-floor windows centered above the entrance. The house to the left is partially obscured by the adjacent buildings at 18-22 Main Street, with a window visible to the right.

The west elevation has a single ground floor window to the left, while the right side features a replacement single door and a plank partition within a wide ground floor opening. A stone surround remains for a blocked first-floor door, with a stone margin visible to the right arris.

The north elevation shows two ground floor windows for the western house and two smaller first-floor windows. There is a panelled door leading to the eastern house, which includes a four-pane fanlight and steps, along with single ground and first floor windows to the right.

The east elevation is partially visible, showing one first-floor window to the right. The principal elevation predominantly features four-pane timber sash and case windows, while the rear has twelve-pane timber sash and case windows with horns. The rear east gable has crowstepped detailing, with raised flat-head skews elsewhere and moulded crowsteps. The gable apex chimney stacks are located on the eastern house, while the western house has a gable apex stack. The roofline of the western house is lower than that of the adjoining house. The pitched, slated roof of the eastern house is laid in diminishing courses, while the western house has modern red clay pantiles with a slate easing course and rooflights at the front and rear. There is also a piended slate lean-to porch roof.

The interior was not seen in 2000.

In addition, there is a rubble sandstone garden wall extending from the eastern elevation of 16 and 18-22 Main Street, enclosing the garden. Blocked openings are present in the north and northeast corners.
