Description

The stables and house at Culross Abbey House date from the later part of the 19th century. This two-storey building has a rectangular plan and features four bays. It includes a forestair and dormer windows, constructed from tooled rubble sandstone with ashlar quoins and margins.

On the northern elevation, the advanced forestair is located on the left at the third bay and is topped with a stone balustrade and ashlar coping stones. There is a door on the first floor, with a round-headed dormer breaking the eaves above it. To the left of the door, there are two first-floor dormers, and one to the right. The pitched dormer heads break the eaves above the windows. The ground floor has two windows to the right and a narrow horizontal vent. Beneath the forestair is a half-arch, with two additional vents to the right and a door at the far right.

The eastern elevation is a plain gable wall. The southern elevation features a ground floor window to the right and a door to the left. Above the ground floor window, there is a first-floor bipartite dormer window breaking the eaves, with a stone mullion. To the left, partially visible, there is another door and two first-floor dormer windows breaking the eaves, with pitched dormer heads above the windows. There are also two blocked-up vents to the left.

The western elevation has a plain gable wall at the first floor, while the ground floor is not visible. The northern side has a replacement timber glazed door, and the southern side has timber boarded doors. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case with horns. The roof is pitched and covered with slate laid in diminishing courses, featuring crowstepped gables and coped gable apex stacks, with a ridge stack that is off-centre to the east.

The interior was not seen in 2001.

Additionally, there are square-plan gatepiers to the south of the eastern gable, topped with pyramidal coping stones, and a short section of wall connects the gatepier to the building.
