Description
St Mungo's Cottage, located on Low Causeway in Culross, is an early 18th century, two-storey, three-bay house. A later addition from the 18th century features a two-storey, two-bay section on the east side. The building has a late 20th century rear wing and a lean-to. It is constructed with ashlar margins and has a harled finish, with painted quoins on the southeast and northeast corners at the first floor.
On the south elevation, the original three-bay section is to the left, featuring three ground floor windows (with a former door now replaced by a central window) and three first floor windows directly above. The two-bay section to the right includes a door on the left with a fanlight and a corniced lintel, and a window to the right, with two first floor windows centred above at the eaves. A wall extends from the right at ground level, containing a door that connects to a tall rubble sandstone garden wall.
The west elevation has a ground floor window to the left, with the rear wing set back. This wing features three first floor windows and two piended dormer windows integrated into the roof. There is a lean-to at ground level with two arches inside.
On the north elevation, a piended dormer window is located wholly in the roof at the far right, alongside a lean-to at ground level that contains two windows. A first floor window is present to the left in the rear wing, with two additional first floor windows in the left return of the rear wing. A section set back to the left has a first floor window to the right, a lean-to at ground level, rooflights, and varied fenestration.
The east elevation features a plain gable wall at the first floor and a lean-to greenhouse at ground level. There is another lean-to to the right, with a door on the left and a window on the right.
The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case with horns, and there are two roof lights at the front. The building has pitched slate roofs, with coped gable apex stacks, a coped ridge stack, and polygonal clay cans.
Inside, the ground floor rooms of the earlier section have a lower ceiling height, and there is an arched alcove in the east room on both the ground and first floors.
To the east of the house, a tall rubble sandstone wall connects to St Mungo's Chapel, with an outhouse attached to the north of the wall that has two doors.
