Thomson's Lodging, 2-4 Bank Street, Inverkeithing

Thomson's Lodging, located at 2-4 Bank Street in Inverkeithing, dates back to 1617. This traditional town house is two storeys high, with three storeys at the rear, and features a four-bay design. A notable aspect is the three-stage corbelled cap-house stair tower at the southwest corner, along with a carved over-door pediment and a window lintel panel. In around 1966, a single-storey extension was added to the south, which is two storeys at the rear and has a three-bay layout. This extension is harled and includes moulded stone margins and a moulded eaves course on both the east and west sides.

On the west elevation, there is a timber boarded door at the base of the stair tower to the right, framed by a moulded architrave and topped with a carved pediment. This pediment is inscribed and dated with a biblical quote. To the right of the door, there are three unevenly spaced ground floor windows, and an arrow slit is located on the right return. The second stage of the stair tower features a window, while the right return has a transomed and mullioned window. The first floor has two evenly spaced windows to the left. The plain gable head of the stair tower rises above the roof line, with one window on the left return and two on the right return. The circa 1966 extension includes a recessed two-storey link with a garage door on the ground floor and a window above, along with a window and door on the right return, and two windows in the single-storey section at the street line.

The south elevation adjoins No 8 Bank Street. The rear elevation is three storeys high and has a four-bay layout, featuring an arched doorway to the left and a small ground floor window to the right, situated beneath the turnpike stair that leads to a door on the first floor. There are two additional ground floor windows to the right of the stair, and three pink polished granite columns without capitals can be found in the back garden.

The north elevation adjoins Nos 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19 Townhall Street. The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with leaded panes in the transomed and mullioned window of the stair tower. The roof is pitched, with pantiles on the main house and concrete tiles on the circa 1966 extension.

Inside, there is a stone turnpike stair leading to the tower, with stone architraves and pointed arches at the foot of the stair tower and the west kitchen extension, which reveals a thick former outer wall. Most of the original moulded stone fireplaces have been restored, and early 18th century panelling can be found in the former reception rooms at the rear, including a hearth dated '1617', along with exposed timber beams.
