Description

Gifford Bank and Gate Piers is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay classical mansion featuring single-storey wings. The building is constructed of squared and snecked pink sandstone, which has unfortunately been heavily pointed, with paler dressings on the south elevation. The sides and rear are made of rubble. The south elevation includes a base, first-floor cill, and blocking courses, along with a moulded cornice across all bays. There are tablests above the centre bay and the wings.

On the south elevation, the centre bay is slightly advanced and features broad pilasters and a corniced doorcase with carved capitals and paterae. The tripartite doorway has a segmentally arched fanlight above it, with a first-floor window situated above. The flanking bays have slightly recessed segmentally arched panels, each with tripartite windows and ashlar mullions on the first floor. The outer wings, which are also slightly recessed, have similarly detailed tripartite windows.

The north elevation includes a low, piend-roofed service block attached to the east wing at the rear, along with a further single-storey outbuilding at the northern end. There is a slightly later piend-roofed stairblock addition at the centre of the two-storey bays. The windows feature small-pane glazing patterns in sash and case style, with end stacks that retain their original cans. The piend roofs are covered with purple slates.

The gatepiers at the south are made of corniced pink ashlar and topped with pyramidal caps.
