Description

The Nungate is a two-storey house located at 2 and 4 Nungate Road in North Berwick. It features a complex plan and is composed of a later 18th century farmhouse designed in a Z-plan with re-entrant angles to the northwest and southeast, which was extended by J S Richardson in 1924. The exterior is harled with ashlar dressings and includes a variety of single and bipartite windows.

On the east elevation, the boundary wall has been altered and integrated with a roll-moulded arched door from 1924. There are flanking single lights to the right and a bipartite window to the left, both with chamfered arrises and lead paning. An additional roll-moulded door is located to the right.

The west elevation retains the original end gable on the right, with infill additions made in 1924 at the center and left. The south elevation has been modified to form an L-plan, featuring a large canted five-sided projection with a piend roof to the right. The north elevation consists of four symmetrical bays.

The windows are sash and case with a small-pane glazing pattern, and the building has coped end and gable stacks along with a slate roof.

Inside, the vestibule and hall, designed in Romanesque style in 1924, are finished in ashlar and incorporate fragments from the nearby Abbey ruins to the west. The interior features a chevroned arch and a blind arcade, a beamed ceiling adorned with plaster casts from Abbey tiles, and a decorative classical chimneypiece.

The property is enclosed by a rubble boundary wall with a wide entrance to the southeast, and there is a roll-moulded gateway to the east with a wrought-iron gate.
