Description

Lochside House is a 2-storey T-plan house built around 1740, featuring a harled exterior with ashlar dressings. The south front has three bays, with rusticated quoins, margins, and cill and eaves band courses. The central bay projects and is topped with a pedimental attic gablet that has a broad stack. The doorways are arched with keyblocked doorpieces and moulded architraves, with arch rings springing directly from pilaster capitals. The gables were originally windowless and have cable-moulded scroll skews.

The rear wing was enlarged around 1770 to form an L-plan with a broad two-window gable, featuring rusticated quoin angles and sections of cornice overlooking the northern avenue. The gables have plain skews, and there are two closer spaced attic windows in the gable, along with a chimney gablet on the west flank. Extensive alterations were made around 1911, including the addition of two flanking wallhead attic gables with four-light windows and a slim west wing containing a service stair and servants' rooms, creating a gabled frontage. The north elevation of the back wing received a box dormer and a four-light wide rectangular bay on the ground floor. An east wing was added in 1926 but was demolished in 1983.

The interior is of considerable interest, featuring an unusual plan with a long, easy central stair that runs back through a series of timber arches to the upper hall in the back wing. The ceilings of both the upper and lower halls have plain circlets. The ground floor west room was the original kitchen, which has a high chimneypiece with a lintel on cantilever brackets. The first-floor west room features a lugged architraved chimneypiece. The stair rail has been replaced with cast iron, and other rooms were partly refitted around 1810, showcasing reeded architraves between domino-block cornerpieces and grey and white marble chimneypieces of similar style. Additional woodwork was added in the early 20th century, with the north room featuring decorative tiles.
