Description

The Gate Lodge and 1 Parkhill Holdings, located on Gates Road, date back to the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. This building features a castellated design and a Gothic archway, with screen walls that connect a pair of lodges at the western approach to the former Castle Semple Estate. The structure is built of droved ashlar stone with raised ashlar margins and includes a base course.

The central carriage arch is tall and flanked by paired panelled pilasters topped with obelisk finials, along with a frieze and cornice. There are low pedestrian arch openings in the screen walls on either side. The outer bays contain a slightly advanced pair of lodges, each featuring pointed-arch niches in the re-entrant angles. The western elevations have central window openings with pilastered jambs, finialled ogival mouldings, and blocked quatrefoils above. The angle pilasters are fluted and topped with obelisk pinnacles, and the building is crowned with castellated parapets.

The North Lodge (1 Parkhill Holdings) is a single-storey structure with an attic, featuring pointed-arch window openings on the south and east elevations. There is a large later extension to the north and a piended roof. The South Lodge (The Gate Lodge) is two-storey with pointed-arch window openings on the north elevation and a castellated design. It has a large flat-roofed extension added to the south and east.

Inside, as observed in 2011, the South Lodge has a later interior, while the North Lodge has an altered room layout. Both lodges have later, non-traditional glazing and roofing materials, as well as corniced square and circular-plan stacks.
