Description

East Lodge at Preston Grange in Prestonpans dates from around 1850 and has undergone modern additions and alterations. This single-storey, three-bay gate lodge is designed in a Baronial style, featuring crowstepped gables and an essentially asymmetrical T-plan layout. The exterior is constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone, with tooled ashlar dressings, and includes a moulded base course at the entrance porch.

The south elevation is asymmetrical and consists of three bays. To the right, there is an advanced gabled porch with a mock doorway that has a modern glazed timber door, framed by a moulded architrave, cornice, and strapwork head, which includes a blank cartouche and is topped with a ball and obelisk finial. The porch has windows on its returns. The central bay features a window with a gabletted dormer head that breaks the eaves, which is carved and moulded with a thistle finial. To the left, there are bipartite windows with a generous mullion and a double-gabletted dormer head, also breaking the eaves and decorated with rose and star finials.

The west elevation has an advanced window centered in the gable, which includes a deep, sloping cill course, and a stepped stone roof. The north section was not seen in 2000. The east elevation has a window centered in the gable, with a modern wall adjoining to the right. The lodge features modern timber-effect windows, graded grey slate roofs with modern ridges, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge and gablehead stacks are made of ashlar and are coped.

The interior was not seen in 2000. The gate arch is a symmetrical structure made of broached and droved ashlar, featuring a high round arch with chamfered margins and stepped curvilinear coping, topped with a small ball finial on a plinth. It is flanked by pedestrian gateways with droved chamfered margins and raised coping, all set within the Prestongrange Boundary Walls, which are listed separately.
