Description

The Gothenburg Tavern, located on High Street, Prestonpans, is a substantial public house likely designed by Dunn & Findlay in 1908, constructed in the Arts and Crafts style with Art Nouveau interior details. It is a two-story building, essentially six bays wide. The main elevations are faced in red sandstone ashlar up to the ground floor, with the upper floor finished in brown harling and sandstone dressings complemented by timber features.

The North (front) elevation is quasi-symmetrical, also six bays wide, with the two central bays slightly raised and projecting from the upper floor. The ground floor features two tripartite windows separated by a blank carved plaque; above them are two Tudor-style, mock-timbered canted oriel windows set beneath a jettied gablehead. Flanking the central bays on the ground floor are tripartite windows and moulded, round-arched doorways, the one to the Northeast positioned at a corner angle. The first floor has a timber balustrade; the projecting bays are flanked by a tripartite window and canted timber oriel windows embracing the corner angles. The return angle features a single window to the West and a glazed door and a single window to the East.

The South elevation is irregular and less visually distinctive, including a variety of single, bipartite, tripartite windows, and one large stair window. Flat-roofed extensions are present to the rear.

The East elevation has a projecting, piended ingleneuk with three small windows, flanked by a single window to the rear. The West elevation also has a projecting, piended ingleneuk, this time with four small windows, flanked by a bipartite window to the North and a single window to the rear.

Fenestration varies considerably; the front elevation's ground-floor windows feature an unusual diamond pattern in timber glazing below leaded upper lights, while the first-floor windows are divided into sections of eight small panes, using casement or top-opening mechanisms. Other elevations incorporate a variety of sash and case, top-opening, and fixed timber windows.

The roofs are piended, with the exception of the front gablehead which is flat-profiled, and covered in red clay tiles, with matching ridges. Projecting chimney breasts are present on the East and West elevations above the ingleneuks, topped with tall stacks finished in harling and brick caps with plain cans. A similar projecting stack is also at the rear. Decorative rainwater hoppers on all elevations are inscribed with the date "1908."

The interior remains exceptionally well-preserved, largely intact, with an island bar, gantry, and original fittings. Features include arcaded recesses and an ingleneuk in the bar, and another ingleneuk in the East room. A jug bar is located behind a glazed, panelled door on the front. Decorative Art Nouveau tilework sits above a timber-panelled dado, complemented by some decorative stained glass.
