Description
Dated 1757, with an addition to the east circa 1870 and a later small extension to the south, Walford is a two-storey house with a garret. The original house is symmetrical and three-bay wide, with large, squat dormers on both front elevations. It is constructed of generally coursed or snecked rubble, using variegated sandstone in the original house and mostly red sandstone in the later addition. The 1870s addition features smooth dressings and rounded chamfers.
The north elevation presents the original symmetrical three-bay design. On the ground floor, a central doorway has a moulded surround, now with a modern door and plain fanlight, flanked by two windows with simple moulded surrounds. The first floor has three windows with similar moulded surrounds. A dormer to the garret features a single modern window within what appears to be an original moulded surround. A recessed addition from the 1870s includes a plain door on the ground floor flanked by two windows, and a single bipartite window on the first floor.
The south elevation’s ground floor is partially obscured by a flat-roofed bathroom extension that covers the original doorway, flanked by two windows with simple moulded surrounds. Three windows are on the first floor with simple moulded surrounds. A dormer to the garret contains two symmetrical windows with moulded surrounds, separated by an empty plaque. The 1870s addition projects forward in a large bow with a conical roof, featuring three windows on each floor.
The east elevation has a broad gable, dating from the 1870s, with irregular features. It includes two windows on the ground floor, three on the first floor, and a central corbelled empty niche at the upper level. The northeast corner wall is corbelled at first-floor level.
Windows are timber sash and case, with a 10-pane casement on the south dormer. The original house has 12-pane windows, while the addition mostly features 6 or 9-pane windows. The roof is covered in graded grey slate, with a plain skew to the west gable and an unusual raised and curvilinear skew to the east gable. Two stacks on the original house are constructed of coursed rubble, topped with a plain cope and four plain cans each.
The interior of the original house includes a hall running from north to south, featuring three elliptical arches supported by pilasters, and a winding stair to the upper storey. Most rooms retain 18th-century cornices, fireplaces, and six-panelled doors, and there is a cellar on the north side. The 1870s addition incorporates stained glass by J.A.S. Salmon.
A north gateway is constructed of red sandstone ashlar, with two square-section gatepiers having a cavetto cornice and ball finial; the westmost pier is fallen and broken. A pedestrian gateway to the west, adjoining the house, is topped by a carved inscription reading "Walford". The doors are lined and braced.
Garden walls enclose the garden to the south and east. The high wall is constructed of eroded sandstone with decorative coping made of mortared lava fragments. A sealed doorway in the south wall has an eroded moulded surround.
