Description
The West Churchyard in Preston is an early 19th century walled enclosure surrounding a round graveyard that dates back to an earlier period. The tall walls are constructed from random sandstone rubble, with the northern wall featuring an ashlar coping and piers at the corners and central gateway. These piers are square in section, with a plinth, projecting cope, and plain cap. The entrance is adorned with decorative gates made of cast iron in the upper section and wrought iron.
The other walls have rubble coping and the southern and eastern walls incorporate several well-carved stones from the 17th and 18th centuries, although these are eroding. In the center of the graveyard, there are two large stones from the 19th century. Additionally, many stones, primarily from the 19th and early 20th centuries, are gathered and lying prone in the northwest corner of the graveyard.
