Rock Cottage, Prestonpans

Rock Cottage in Prestonpans is possibly of 17th century origin, with alterations and mid 19th century detailing. This single-storey, irregular three-bay cottage sits above a cellar and extends out over the shore into the Firth of Forth, appearing to grow from the coastal rock. The walls are made of very random sandstone, with some massive and eroded blocks, and are partly rendered. They are raked against the sea.

The east elevation features a south section that is recessed and rendered, with a steeper roof pitch, and includes a modern glazed timber porch and door. There are two windows flanking the porch, with the northern window having droved and painted margins. The west elevation has a boarded cellar door beneath an ancient timber lintel, while the main floor has three asymmetrical and altered windows with margins raised in cement and painted. The upper north gable has two foreshortened windows, which are roughly cement rendered.

All windows are modern uPVC with dummy astragals. The roof is covered in ungraded Welsh slates, gabled with skews and a central skew. There is a tall brick stack at the south gable and another brick stack on the ridge, both with plain cans.
