Description
The War Memorial located on High Street in Prestonpans was designed by William Birnie Rhind in 1921. It is a two-stage structure made of sandstone, featuring a pier that supports a statue. The statue depicts a thoughtful soldier, known as "Tommy," who is dressed in a greatcoat, wears a bonnet, and holds a rifle. This statue is positioned on a cavetto plinth. The square pier is constructed from rusticated ashlar and includes inscribed panels commemorating the First World War (1914-1918) and a roll moulding atop a stepped base plinth, which incorporates an additional inscribed panel for the Second World War (1939-1945).
