Old Cemetery, Knab Road, Lerwick

The Old Cemetery on Knab Road in Lerwick dates back to the early 19th century. It features a triangular layout with a classical entrance gateway at the northern corner, which has three bays and arched openings. The boundary wall is made of cement-rendered and lined rubble, with some sections topped with droved ashlar coping. The entrance gateway is constructed from droved ashlar and includes a segmental-arched carriage gate in the center, topped with a stepped block pediment. This gateway is flanked by lower, slightly recessed pedestrian gates.

Inside the cemetery, there are various grave enclosures that feature cast-iron railings resting on droved ashlar copes, lining the eastern and southern walls and flanking the path along the western wall. Notably, there is a memorial to the Laurenson family located in enclosure number 12. This monument consists of marble round-arched memorial slabs set within Romanesque arcaded recesses made of red sandstone, all within an ashlar-coped stugged sandstone wall.
