Description

The Power Station at Prestongrange Colliery is a mid-19th century, two-storey building that originally served as a generating house. It has a rectangular plan and is situated on sloping ground. The exterior is made of red brick, featuring contrasting brickwork banding, and includes round-arched openings on the first floor.

On the south elevation, there are seven bays. The central bay has a modern timber door with a radial semicircular fanlight, while the penultimate bay from the left contains a vertically-boarded timber door with a similar fanlight. The remaining bays have windows.

The west gable has three bays, with a later brick addition on the right at ground level. This elevation features brick-infilled segmental-arched openings on the ground floor and windows on the first floor, along with a decorative brick roundel centered above.

The north elevation also has seven bays. It includes a modern timber bipartite door in the penultimate bay from the left at ground level, which has a cement lintel. The other bays at ground level have brick-infilled segmental-arched openings, and there is a brick-infilled opening in the outer left bay on the first floor, with windows in the remaining bays. A large wall-mounted metal bracket projects from the outer left.

The east gable consists of three bays and features a cement ramp with brick walls and flat coping that leads down to a central slapping at ground level, which has a two-leaf vertically-boarded timber door. There are brick-infilled segmental-arched openings to the left and right at ground level, with windows in the first-floor bays, and the central window is part-infilled. A decorative brick roundel is centered above this elevation.

The interior was not seen in 2000. The building predominantly features 18-pane fixed timber windows with radial semicircular fanlights, which are covered by grills. The roof is covered with red pantiles and includes a stone ridge, stone skews, and decorative skewputts, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
