Description

South Lodge and Gate Arch at Preston Grange, Prestonpans, dates from around 1850. It is a single-storey, three-bay, T-plan gate lodge featuring crowstepped gables. The front elevation is made of squared and snecked pink sandstone, while the rest of the building is constructed from random rubble, with broached and droved dressings. There have been modern alterations, particularly to the rear.

The west (front) range is symmetrical, with a central doorway that has a modern glazed timber door. This doorway is flanked by two windows that have advanced margins and lintels that break the eaves, topped with flat copes. The gables are blank and feature two square steel plates each.

The east (rear) wing, which was not seen in 2000, is perpendicular to the west section and includes a door and window to the north and a window to the south.

The windows are plate glass timber sash and case types. The roof is covered with graded grey-green slate and has stone ridges. The north roof of the east section includes a modern dormer, along with skylight and Velux additions. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, and there are gablehead stacks that are coped and have circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 2000.

The gate arch is a symmetrical structure made of broached and droved sandstone ashlar. It features a high round arch with chamfered margins and stepped curvilinear coping, topped by a ball finial on a plinth at the apex. There is a pedestrian gateway to the east through the Prestongrange Boundary Walls, which is listed separately, and it includes a modern wrought-iron gate.
