Description
Prestongrange Colliery, built in 1874 by Harvey and Company of Hoyle, Cornwall, is a three-storey beam engine pump house and pump. The northern elevation features rusticated sandstone ashlar, while the rest of the building is made of stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone. It has a rusticated sandstone ashlar base course and an eaves course. The pump is operated by a cast-iron beam and an Oregon pine pump rod.
The southern entrance gable has wooden steps with finialed balusters leading to a round-arched opening with keystone detailing. This opening includes brick infill that forms a tripartite doorway, featuring a central two-leaf diagonally-boarded timber door flanked by three-pane windows. Above the door is a tooled tablet that reads '1874' with the initials 'ML' on either side. There are three evenly arranged windows on the first and second floors.
On the western elevation, there is a two-leaf diagonally-boarded timber door to the left at ground level, with pairs of windows centered on the first and second floors.
The northern gable features a two-leaf diagonally-boarded timber door with a radial semicircular fanlight at ground level. There are wall-mounted metal brackets to the outer left and right at ground level. A giant central beam projects from the third floor through a deep rectangular opening in the vertically-boarded timber frontage at the apex, with timber doors flanking the opening and an eight-pane window to the right.
The eastern elevation has two pairs of windows flanking the center at ground level, with pairs of windows centered on the first and second floors. There is a brick infilled window to the left between the first and second floors, along with wall-mounted metal brackets at ground level and to the left of center on the first floor.
The interior, which was not seen in 2000, includes the steam end of the beam, steam cylinder, and cut-off valves, as well as a timber staircase with turned balusters. The building features ten-pane fixed timber windows covered by bipartite grills, a grey slate roof with a metal ridge, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
