Description

Basil Champneys, 1896. 2-storey and attic asymmetrical villa with unusual stair turret at front. Squared, snecked red sandstone rubble; ashlar dressings. Harled 1st floor above string course. Raised cills. Variety of bipartite or paired single light windows.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: canted stair bay at centre with raised base course and cornice. 2 stages of 3-lights stepping down to right with blank panel between floors at centre. Canted gable head with coped crowsteps, bull finial and voussoired oculus. Flanked to right by stack. Door to left with fanlight and scrolled timber canopy.

2 flat-roofed bipartite dormers.

N ELEVATION: 4-bay. Full-height 3-stage, 5-sided angle turret at left, corbelled and slate hung above ground; ogee lead roof with ball finial. Single storey advanced bay to right.

W ELEVATION: penticed roof projection at centre with garage to right. Small-pane sash and case, and casement windows. Grey-green slate mansard roof; swept eaves. Coped stacks.

INTERIORS: good period details. Pine panelling. Timber stair balustrade and skirting to each tread. Lugged chimneypieces, one cast-iron ogee surround.
