Description
35 Westgate in North Berwick is a two-storey, L-plan classical bank and manager's house designed by Thomas Leadbetter in 1894. The building features a cream ashlar sandstone front that is channelled at the ground floor on the north side, with a first-floor cill course and a simple eaves cornice. The sides and rear are constructed of rubble.
On the northeast elevation, there are two recessed bays to the east and a broad advanced pedimented gabled bay to the west. To the right of the recessed bays is an architraved and corniced door with a keystone, accompanied by a narrow window. To the left, there is a four-light canted window with a stone balustrade above it. The first floor has a bipartite window flanked by pilasters, with a segmental pediment above that interrupts the balustrade parapet. The advanced gable features a round-arched doorway set within a recessed pilastered panel, complete with an arched fanlight and a bipartite window to the left. The first floor has a tripartite window with pilaster mullions. A carved heraldic shield with acanthus decorates the pediment. Short flights of steps lead to the doorways, which have panelled doors. The sash windows have two-pane upper panels. The building has raised plain skews, a coped gable head, and roof stacks, topped with a red plain tile roof.
Inside, the building includes panelled doors and window shutters, as well as decorative plasterwork cornices and strapwork. At the front, there is a low rubble retaining wall with a coped parapet.
