Description
Norham is a house located at 28 Marmion Road in North Berwick, designed by T Duncan Rhind in 1895. This two-storey and attic residence is built in an English cottage style, with a single-storey rear addition added in 1904. The building features a squared, snecked rubble base course with harled upper sections and ashlar dressings.
The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has two bays and a slightly advanced section with a broad gable on the left. It includes a wide semi-circular moulded ashlar archway leading to a recessed porch positioned to the right of the centre, adorned with cartouche details. There is a three-light window with leaded glass for the hall, which has stained glass upper panels. The entrance features a panelled door with a bottle glass upper panel set in a roll-moulded surround, along with a three-light window above. To the right of the arch, there is a small light in an unusually detailed surround. The advanced left bay has a bipartite window at ground level, complete with a flush scrolled frieze and moulded cornice. The gable displays applied timber framing and a four-light window, with a jettied gable head featuring strapwork pargetting. A flat-roofed dormer is situated at the centre.
On the north elevation, there is a projecting addition at ground level to the right, accompanied by a canted four-light bay on the left, which is bordered by iron railings and features a tripartite design in the applied timber gable above.
The east elevation includes a narrow stair window with a decorative corbel below, alongside a bipartite window with a five-light flat-roofed timbered oriel above that breaks the eaves. The casement windows have small-pane glazing, while the sash windows at the rear have plate glass lower panels. The eaves and barge boarding are supported by brackets, and the roofs and dormers are covered with red tiles. The chimney stacks are capped with deep ashlar coping.
Inside, the house retains excellent original detailing. The hall features a mariner theme with a carved timber nautical frieze that bears an inscribed poem. A central compass relief serves as a ceiling rose, complete with a gilded arrow. There is a bracketed gallery overlooking the hall, along with decorative chimneypieces and grates.
The property also includes gatepiers and parapet walls, with a random rubble sandstone parapet on the south side, capped with obelisk piers inscribed with "Norham." The gateway has since been filled in to serve as a parapet.
