Description

11 and 11A Marmion Road in North Berwick is a two-storey and attic villa designed by J W Hardie in 1898. It features a three-bay rectangular plan with later additions at the rear. The exterior is constructed of squared, snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings.

The northern elevation, which faces the entrance, has three bays. The central doorway is flanked by a canted bay on the right, which is behind an arched loggia that supports a timber balcony above. The balcony has a door in the center and a bipartite window to the right. The outer bay on the left is advanced and features a full-height canted bay with a jettied gable head above, adorned with applied timber framing. At the center of the roof, there is a three-light flat-roofed dormer.

On the southern elevation, there is a piend-roofed projection to the right with bipartite windows and a lean-to outbuilding at ground level. To the left, a recessed bay leads to a five-light projecting bay at ground level.

The western elevation has an altered stair window that has been converted into a doorway with a forestair at the center. There is a penticed-roof outbuilding projecting from this side, and a gabled dormer is located at the center, flanked by chimney stacks. A conservatory is attached to this elevation.

The eastern elevation features an oriel window above a timber loggia that has leaded glass panels with fleur-de-lys designs. The loggia arches also contain glass.

The villa has small-pane casement windows with plate glass lower panels at the front, a grey-green slate roof, coped stacks, and bracketed eaves. Inside, there are panelled doors, simple classical chimneypieces, and a tiled vestibule.
