Post Office, 4 Westgate, North Berwick

The building at 4 Westgate, North Berwick, is a two-storey, five-bay Edwardian Baronial post office designed by the HM Office of Works in 1906. It features a cream ashlar sandstone front, with squared rubble on the sides and red rubble at the rear.

On the southeast elevation, there is a raised base course, and the central bay is framed by a pilaster strip. The central door has a moulded surround and a triple keystone, which connects to a carved panel on the first floor. The first-floor window in the center is recessed and flanked by columns with carved capitals. Above it, there is a moulded keystone with a carved cartouche and swagging in an arched recess that breaks the entablature. The flanking ground floor windows have triple keystones and simple cornices on convex corbels. To the right, there is a doorway in the outer bay. The windows feature small-pane fanlights and panelled doors, with architraved first-floor windows and a lintel course at that level. A deep entablature with a substantial cornice is present, along with a segmental arch over the central bay and a blocking course above. There is also a cast-iron post box set into the wall panel of the outer west bay below the window cill.

A gateway with an ashlar surround is located on the eastern side. The building has sizeable ground floor extensions at the rear, a 12-pane glazing pattern, plain raised skews with coped ashlar gable head stacks, and a slate roof.
