Description

The County Hotel, located at 107 and 109 High Street in North Berwick, was designed by J W Hardie in 1899. This building is a 4-bay, 3-storey public house and tenement featuring a third breaking eaves. It is constructed from squared, coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, while the rear is made of brick. There is a string course above the ground floor and a simple eaves cornice.

On the north elevation facing the street, there are two full-height canted bays located in the second and fourth bays from the left, which are corbelled to square and gabled at the second floor. The doors are set in recessed bays and feature large plate glass fanlights, with a window converted to a door on the right. A pediment is situated above the left panelled door, and oval oculi are present in the recessed bays at the second floor. The gables of the canted bays are adorned with scrolled skewputts.

The south elevation at the rear includes a projecting stair block on the east side, along with extensive single-storey flat-roofed additions to the south. The upper panels of the sash and case windows have small-pane glazing, while the ground floor features public house windows. The building has a slated mansard roof with coped gables on the east and west sides, complemented by curved skewputts and gable stacks.
