Description
The Manse at 4 Law Road in North Berwick is an 1823, two-storey, three-bay classical house featuring single-storey, single-bay side projections. It is constructed from squared and coursed rubble with droved plain ashlar dressings, raised margins, and a base course.
The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has an advanced central bay with an arched doorway set in a pilastered doorpiece. This includes a panelled door flanked by small-pane sidelights and topped with a decorative semi-circular fanlight. Broad angle pilasters support a moulded cornice and a blocking course that is raised at the centre. The single-storey wings on either side have windows set in recessed arched panels, and both wings have half-piended roofs with raised curtain walls to the south.
The east and west sides feature a low stone outbuilding to the east. The north elevation is symmetrical, with tripartite windows at ground level flanking a blind central window, and two flat-roofed 19th-century dormers above.
The sash and case windows have a small-pane glazing pattern, and the building is topped with a slated piend roof, featuring a central pyramidal ventilator and octagonal, corniced, linked end stacks.
Inside, there is a tripartite vestibule doorway with a decorative fanlight, fine plasterwork, panelled doors and shutters, and low arches with volutes leading to the hall. A decorative cast-iron balustrade with a timber handrail enhances the interior.
The quadrant walls are made of coursed rubble and feature stugged ashlar octagonal gatepiers.
