Description
27-29 Argyll Street in Campbeltown is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay house featuring classical details. It has a lower single bay entrance stair addition that is recessed on the right side. The ground floor is finished in stugged ashlar, while the upper floor and dressings are in polished ashlar. The side and rear elevations are roughcast. Architectural details include a base course, a dentilled string course at the first floor, a band course, and a cornice at the eaves.
On the southeast elevation, there is a pilastered entrance door topped with a cornice and block pediment. The entrance features a four-pane grained door with a 15-pane fanlight above, which matches the fanlight over the inner vestibule door. The ground floor windows have panelled aprons, and the margins are battered with projecting cills at both the ground and first floors. The lower bay, which is rendered and lined, has polished ashlar detailing, a corniced door (modern at No 29), and a window with a panelled apron above. The elevation also includes a base course, cornice, and blocking course at the eaves, along with a margined and corniced entrance door and a margined window with an apron at the first floor.
The ground floor features modern glazing, while the first floor has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is grey slate with a cast-iron gutter and downpipe. There are piend-roofed, slate-hung timber dormers with plate glass timber sash and case windows. The gables have multi-flue, coped apex stacks with a variety of cans, and the ashlar skews are topped with block skewputts.
Additionally, there is a gateway to No 29, which consists of capped ashlar piers, a coped ashlar wall to the left, and a cast-iron gate with adjoining railing.
