Description

Dirleton House, built around 1825, is a two-storey, three-bay house featuring classical detailing and a single-storey rear projection. The structure is made of square, coursed rubble with an ashlar base course and dressings, and it has raised margins. The sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern.

On the west elevation, there is a raised and pedimented bay at the center, with a pilastered doorpiece that includes a deep, decorative fanlight and a panelled door. An unusual wrought-iron lamp bracket in a wishbone form is also present. The outer angles are accentuated by broad pilasters, and there is a moulded cornice and blocking course above. The outer bays feature single windows.

The east elevation, which is the rear, has a piend-roofed projection on the ground to the right that has been converted into a conservatory. At the center, there are two grouped first-floor windows.

On the south elevation, there is a stair window at the center, with a blind window below and flanking windows on either side.

The north elevation is three-bay, with a wide canted outer bay to the left that extends to full height. The roof is slated with a piend design, and there are octagonal stacks grouped in sets of three.

Inside, the house retains many original features, including simple classical marble chimneypieces, panelled window shutters and doors, dado rails, and decorative plasterwork. There is a tripartite inner door leading to the vestibule, which also has a fanlight.

To the east, there is a small contemporary coach-house featuring a pedimented west entrance facade and depressed arch doorways, along with a circular opening in the pediment. Additionally, there is a rubble retaining wall made of squared rubble, topped with pyramid-capped gatepiers, which are linked by coped quadrant walls.
