Description

The Castle Gate at Castle Mains in Dirleton is a 16th century round arched gateway that serves as an entrance to the estate. It is integrated into the partial remains of a rubble wall. The northern surround features quirk-edged roll moulding, while the southern side has a segmentally arched embrasure. There is a bar-hole visible in the east jamb.

Adjacent to the gate is a circular, two-storey tower built in the early 19th century from stugged sandstone ashlar. This tower is located at the west angle of the boundary walls and has a battered base with arrow slits. The east side of the tower has paired pointed windows with diamond pane glazing. A forestair on the south side acts as a porch for the doorway below, with an additional doorway above. Below the crenellated gablet coped parapet, there is a string course featuring water spouts with curved arrow slit details. A small chimney is located to the northeast, hidden behind the parapet.

The north and west entrance gateways and boundary walls date from the early 19th century as well. These walls are characterized by raised stugged ashlar bays with gablet coping, roll-moulded outer surrounds, and chamfered inners to the hoodmoulded gateways. The timber doors include yett grilles in their upper panels. The rubble walls are topped with ashlar coping and consist of two stugged ashlar courses with gablet coping above, enclosing the northern and western sides of the castle grounds.
