Description

31 The Lane in Skelmorlie is a villa built around 1888, featuring two stories and three bays, along with a two-bay single-storey service wing to the north. The villa has a canted bay window, gabled dormers with decorative bargeboards, deep eaves, and is constructed with Aberdeen-bond stonework. The front and back are made of squared, tooled, coursed red sandstone, while the sides are roughly squared rubble. Polished ashlar dressings, raised quoin strips, and window margins add to the detailing.

On the west elevation, the main entrance consists of a central two-leaf timber panelled door with a fanlight set in a pointed arch, surrounded by a stop-chamfered, roll-moulded architrave. To the left, there is a bipartite window with a hoodmould, and to the right, a three-light canted bay window. Gabled dormers are present on the first floor, with the service wing to the outer left featuring two windows.

The east elevation at the rear includes a segmental-arched staircase window at the centre, with regular fenestration in the outer bays and dormers on the first floor. The service wing is recessed to the right and contains a garage and a timber boarded back door.

The north and south side elevations have blank gables, and the service wing extends from the north elevation. A gablehead stack is present on the south side only.

The villa features four-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, a corniced stack with octagonal yellow clay cans, graded grey slate roofing, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, there is a half-glazed timber-panelled lobby door with frosted glass. The curved staircase has a decorative cast-iron baluster and a mahogany handrail, with a border-glazed staircase window featuring frosted glass. The principal room includes working timber shutters, a marble chimneypiece, a decorative floral plaster cornice, and a plaster ceiling rose. Decorative cornicing and timber panelled interior doors are found throughout the property.
