Description
Tudor House is a large, asymmetrical Tudor villa built around 1904 by the architects Watson and Salmond. It is mostly two storeys high and constructed of stugged red sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. The west elevation features two advanced, wide gabled bays with mullioned windows; the ground floor windows of these bays are transomed, and one bay features a projecting element. A battered, three-storey square entrance tower is set in the re-entrant angle, accompanied by two narrow bays to the left. The Tudor-arched recessed doorway is framed by a moulded rectangular panel with small side lights, and a blocked cornice above. A plaque with a shaped hood-mould sits above the door and over the first-floor tripartite window, with a shaped parapet above a string course which is broken by a slit opening. A mullioned ground floor window with a parapet is located to the left of the door. Timber framing is evident above. The narrow outer bay has a corbelled and gabled first-floor window rising above the eaves. Mullioned windows are present in the north and south gables. A rear wing extends to the east and returns south to form a U-plan courtyard, partially filled by a conservatory. Two tall, transomed mullioned windows are located at the rear of the main block. Most windows are mullioned, mostly square-headed, and leaded with small panes. Various apex and wall head stacks are present, mostly battered. A tall, square stack is over the north east angle of the rear wing. The roofs are slated, with deeply projecting eaves, and there are various roof levels. A decorative wrought-iron lamp is situated at the main door, set above a balustraded terrace wall to the west. The property is approached by two panelled square gate piers with shaped cornices and pyramidal caps, and panelled wooden gates.
