Description

The Birkenward is a large villa, likely dating from the late 19th century, with significant remodelling in 1904 that embraced the Arts and Crafts style. A simpler, later 20th-century wing extends to the rear. The original house is constructed from stugged red sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. A prominent feature is the canted south gable, where the corners project forward and are accented with decorative iron brattishing. The south elevation has four bays, with the outer bays projecting and connected by an open wooden verandah featuring decorative capitals; behind are a door and French windows. Mullioned windows are found in the finialed outer bays. A projecting bay window is situated at the left of the ground floor, while a two-storey canted bay to the right includes a French window and an iron balcony to the first-floor window above. A string course runs at the level of the first-floor window sills. Corniced chimney stacks rise from the roof, which is covered in slate and features projecting eaves.

Inside, there is some good Art Nouveau decoration. The hall is distinguished by square columns and pilasters with decorative capitals, some linked by segmental arches. Timber panelling is present, along with decorative fireplaces; the hall fireplace has semi-circular recesses framing a niche. A low, canted lounge is located to the north. Irregular rear wings extend from the main body of the house, along with an arcaded service area within the north wall. A corbelled angle turret is attached to the south-west angle of the later rear addition.

The house is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1895. Records from 1912 indicate that plans for the rear wing were not submitted to the district committee. Historic Environment Scotland records show the statutory address is 11 The Crescent, Skelmorlie Village. Minutes from the Ayrshire County Council’s Northern District Committee in 1904 reference additions to the property, though the architect’s name is not recorded.
