Description
Glenorchy is a two-storey villa designed by T Duncan Rhind in 1897, with alterations made in 1930. It is situated on a slope and features a bold design with a battered basement. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked red sandstone rubble, accented with droved ashlar dressings. There are four courses of contrasting cream sandstone banding between the ground and first floors on the front and sides, which are now stained red.
The north elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing a wide gabled advanced bay on the left. The doorway, added in 1930, features a decorative wrought-iron grille on the upper panel. At the center, there is a full-height round tower with an arrow slit at the center of the parapet, along with moulded cill and lintel courses at the first floor. The ground floor has a transomed tripartite window, while the first floor has a simplified version. To the right, there is a projecting basement and a raised ground floor window.
The east elevation, which serves as the entrance, has stone balustraded stairs leading to a terrace with rubble walls. The doorway features a consoled timber canopy set in a roll-moulded surround, with a segmentally arched fanlight and a panelled door that has glazed upper panels. There is a variety of windows, some of which are mullioned.
The south elevation is set into the slope and has irregular openings, including a stair window. The west elevation includes a garage doorway to the basement, added in 1930, along with a variety of windows.
Main openings have chamfered arrises, and there is a range of glazing patterns, with 4-pane and plate glass sash windows being predominant. Decorative gutter heads and timber eaves brackets are present. A broad, narrow stack is located between the turret and gable on the north side, featuring deep ashlar coping. The roof is covered with small double roll clay pantiles.
The property is enclosed by rubble boundary walls, which have a low parapet on the north side with semi-circular coping that rises at intervals to coped piers. The name "Glenorchy" is incised into the right gate pier. There is also a back gateway designed in the Arts and Crafts style, featuring voussoirs, a segmentally arched overflow, and coping.
