Description

Marly Knowe is a cottage-style house located on Windygates Road in North Berwick, designed by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1902. It is two stories high with an attic, featuring harled walls and a rubble base course, with slate hanging above the ground floor.

On the southeast elevation, there is an arched porch at the center with a dated diamond panel above it, flanked by three bell-cast gabled bays. The ground floor has tripartite windows, while the upper floor features bipartites. The outer left bay is recessed and has a door beneath a swept roof. The windows are four-light, and there are two recessed bays to the right of the center with small horizontal windows and a boat-shaped slate-hung dormer that has fish-scale diamond detailing. The outer right bays are advanced and feature a bell-cast gable combined with a stack, with a tripartite window on the ground floor and a single light in the gable head. There is also a single light window in the outer east bay at ground level, with a tripartite window under the eaves.

The northeast elevation has two advanced bell-cast gables at the center, with outer bays that have a shallow jetty and slate hanging on the first floor. A stair window is located in a recessed bay to the right, and a timber conservatory has been added at ground level. The windows vary in size, including single, two-, three-, and four-light options. A harled coped wall extends northward from the east side, concealing flat-roofed rooms that were originally a scullery and coal cellar.

The west gable features an advanced coped crow-stepped gable with a gable stack and a buttressed wall to the right, along with a small light at ground level. There is a recessed bay to the right with a French window.

On the east gable, there is a broad piend-roofed bay to the left and a courtyard doorway at the center, set in a coped harled advanced wall that extends to the right side window light in the outer bay.

The house has small-pane casement windows, decorative gutterheads, and harled stacks with moulded coping. The roof is slate with swept eaves.

The interior has been altered due to subdivision in 1971.

The boundary walls consist of a harled, coped rubble wall with a rubble base course that connects the house to a cottage to the north. There is a segmental arch leading to an ashlar gateway, which is raised at the center and steps down at the sides. A rubble boundary wall is located to the east.

The terrace features a coped rubble wall with ashlar dressings, designed in a crenellated manner, alongside the south elevation. There is a convex flight of steps leading down a central pathway to formal gardens below.
