Windygates, Windygates Road, North Berwick

The gate piers and quadrant walls at Windygates on Windygates Road in North Berwick were designed by Kinnear and Peddie in 1893. This two-storey and attic house features a fine texture harl exterior with red sandstone ashlar dressings.

On the north elevation, there is a pedimented porch with a corniced doorway and a panelled door located off-centre to the left, with a tripartite arrangement flanking to the right. The first floor has three semi-circular and waved pediments that break the eaves. The projecting outer bays have six-light windows at the ground level and jettied five-light windows above, supported by timber brackets. At the centre, there are two swept-roofed two-light dormers.

The south elevation is complex, showcasing a variety of bay treatments and irregular windows, including a large stair window. The east elevation features a service court with a projecting outbuilding to the left and recently reduced walls to the right, along with a gateway. The west elevation has an advanced gabled bay to the left with a tripartite window at ground level and an attic window. There is a canted window in the re-entrant angle to the right with three lights and a half-piended roof, as well as a pedimented window on the first floor to the right.

The building displays a variety of glazing patterns, including plate glass sash windows with some diamond-paned upper panels, casements, and a stair window. There is a lead-paned oriel window on the south side and small-pane casements in the south dormers. The crow-stepped gables, harled stacks with moulded copings, and red plain tiles with tile-hanging on the dormers are notable features, along with a brass lion weathervane on the west gable.

Inside, the house retains period features.

The walled garden, located to the southwest of the house, has a rectangular plan and is enclosed by brick walls. To the north of the walled garden, there is a glasshouse contemporary with the house, designed by MacKenzie and Moncur. This glasshouse has a brick base and an E-plan shape, featuring decorative wrought-iron finials and cast and wrought-iron interior details, including cogged window mechanisms.

To the north, there is a terraced garden with stone steps and urn finials. The quadrant and boundary walls, made of rubble, are located at the north gateway and feature cone finials on the drum piers. The brick boundary wall steps down the site.
