Description
The Manse is a house dating to 1788, with early 19th century additions completed before 1836, and subsequently modern alterations. It is an L-plan house of two storeys, with single-storey wings, the one to the left having a piend and platform roof. The main house is built of squared and snecked dressed rubble with ashlar dressings, with harl (rough plaster) to the north and east sides. Stone mullions are present.
The south elevation, which is the principal facade, features a wide entrance bay with a modern door to the left, a bipartite window to the centre, and a canted window to the right. The upper floor has regular fenestration. Corniced dies (projecting bands) with carved urn finials accent the outer angles. A slightly advanced wing to the outer left has a wide, tripartite window at its centre. A small piended wing is situated to the outer right.
The west elevation has four windows, the one to the right of centre being narrower, and a band course runs through the centre, leading to a tympanum gable with a blind roundel and a tall stack. A small window is inserted into the gablehead of the main block.
On the east elevation, a single-storey bay projects to the left of centre with a window to the right. A lower, slightly recessed projecting bay is positioned centrally, with a door on its return to the right; both bays are piended. A bipartite window is recessed to the outer right of this bay.
The north elevation showcases a stair window within a canted bay, situated below a catslide roof. Windows are spaced regularly to each floor. A small outbuilding projects to the outer right. An advanced gable is located to the left of centre, containing a modern garage door at ground level, windows above, and a low, lean-to extension on the return to the right, with a further dormerheaded window above.
The windows are timber sash and case, with glazing patterns of 4, 8, and 12 panes. The stair window has a decorative surround. The roof is covered with grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks are topped with decorative cans, and there are sawtooth ashlar-coped skewes (sloping elements at roof intersections) with block skewputts and urn finials on the south elevation.
The interior was not inspected in 1998.
An east wall, dated 1634, exists. A parapet wall (approximately 3 feet high), constructed of dry rubble with flat coping, extends from this wall. It features modern carved stone urns on raised plinths, an initialled datestone to the southeast, and a badly eroded carved stone to the northeast.
To the west are square-section, corniced ashlar gatepiers and decorative cast-iron gates. To the east, smaller square-section gatepiers with ball finials adjoin the separately listed east wall. Coped rubble boundary walls enclose the property.
