Description
The West Shaw Street Bridge, located over the Kilmarnock Water on West Shaw Street, was built by Grant, Richie & Co in 1888 and partially reconstructed by Orr, Watt & Co in 1923. This flat, parallel girder bridge features squared piers that rest on a diamond-shaped ashlar cutwater. The bridge is made of painted cast iron and includes cast-iron lamp stands.
On the north and south elevations, the bridge has an advanced girder base supported by outer coursed ashlar walls and a central diamond-shaped cutwater. It features 16 rectangular panels forming the parapet, with paired horizontal parallel bands of a stylized Greek Key design flanking a large floriate scroll detail. The structure is supported by riveted pilaster supports with squared cushion caps that hold the panels. The outer flanks and center have larger square piers with chamfered arrises, projecting square neck copes, and molded pyramid caps. The central piers support fluted lamp shafts that terminate in ball and arm finials, with modern street lighting now placed on top. There are three centrally placed commemorative plaques on the inner side of the north elevation. The bridge accommodates a tarmac road with footpaths on either side.
